Who signs, and what stays private
Written for the parents and caregivers of a child 3 to 10.
Who signs
A parent or legal guardian consents in writing before the first visit. If the parents live apart, we ask who has legal authority to consent to a child's mental health care and we ask for the paperwork. If the parents disagree, Carmen does not start until the adults with authority agree.
What stays private
What a child says and does in the play room is private to the child. Carmen tells you themes and progress, not a play-by-play. Before you start she explains in writing what she keeps between her and the child, and what she shares with the adults.
When she must share
Carmen shares information when a child or someone else is at risk of serious harm. Iowa law requires therapists to report suspected child abuse, and she makes those reports.
Schools, doctors and courts
We share information with a school, a pediatrician or a court only with written permission from the person who can consent, or when the law requires it. We do not write custody or visitation recommendations.
A plain summary
This page is a plain summary, not legal advice. Carmen follows Iowa law and confirms with you what applies to your family.
Questions about who signs?
